The authors study a generalization to directed graphs of the concept of girth, with applications to low density parity check and turbo codes. Section 3 reports on an example from the second author's paper [in Advances in coding theory and cryptography, 181--199, World Sci. Publ., Hackensack, NJ, 2007; MR2454113]. (The paper under review would have benefitted from more thorough proofreading.)
